Individual Income Tax is paid to the Federal （ IRS ）. Many States also require Income Tax to be paid to the State as well. In California, where I live, we pay State Tax.

Since I live in California, I often use California as an example when I talk about State Tax, but the story for Federal （ IRS is the same for all states in the US, so I hope you can find it useful. I think you will find it helpful.
